For over 95 years, the descendants of Roy and Virginia Tuttle have operated an Orchard and farm on the western side of the county. Today, this farm, just north of the little town of Mohawk, is an Agri-business mecca. It is open year-round and they host field trips for school groups; create farm experience opportunities; and they have a wonderful farm store and a dining area. There is literally something for everyone at Tuttle Orchards.
Why do people like Tuttle’s so much? For one thing – it does agri-business well. It hits on all age groups with their differing likes and preferences. For little kids, there is Tractor Town, kids workshops, and field trips where students can pick their own apples and see how apple cider is made. For older kids, there is the sunflower maze in the summer and the corn maze in the fall – along with a variety of summer and fall activities. For the Millenials, who are usually more interested in locally sourced food options, the farm store sells only locally grown produce, and the u-pick apples are a huge draw. Gen Xers like the farm experience. So they will be attending the many festivals, and events, as well as partaking of the many farm activities and workshops. Baby Boomers like to try interesting places to eat, and Tuttle’s Cafe has delicious cuisine that you might not expect from a farm cafe. Can you say, herb-roasted pork loin with cherry sauce? This isn’t your average farm cafe. Besides who could pass up an apple cider slushy or apple or cherry cobbler – YUM!
Tuttle Orchards hosts year round events that coincide with the growing season. In the spring their greenhouse opens up, and you can take workshops to learn about greenhouse gardening. There will be fresh produce available from their fields by summer. In fact, their sweet corn on the cob is available now in the farm store. Apples become available in the late summer and early fall. Their newly expanded cut flower farm will be in full bloom soon, and their sunflower maze is coming along nicely. Pumpkins will be available this fall as well as other squash and gourds. Their farm store and cafe are open year round, but check their website for seasonal hours. Keep up to date with everything that they are doing by following their social media.
